In the end, Yoav Gallant admits, the overwhelming majority of his supporters are in the anti-government camp, and they expect him to remain in the Likud faction and “do the job.” But it’s not a job that suits him. He has no problem fighting for his convictions from a position of influence in the Defense Ministry, for example. But he sees no point in being a backbencher, voting again and again against party policies and awaiting expulsion under the clause preventing him from running for the next Knesset.
