Since the beginning of the war in Gaza, dozens of security detainees have died in military custody, but most of the indictments filed against soldiers deal with weapons offenses. While soldiers accused of stealing weapons have been jailed for months, in many cases involving violence against Gazan detainees, the suspects are not in custody. Sources involved in the work of the Military Prosecutor’s Office say it has avoided deciding on the most serious cases due to worries of public criticism
Despite dozens of cases of detainees dying while in Israeli army custody, and dozens of military investigations into various issues, the army has only brought to trial 15 indicted soldiers for war-related offenses. Of these offenses, most concern theft and arms trading, and none pertain to incidents causing death of a detainee.
