Opinion | A warning: Israel will have no defense when it is charged with crimes against the Palestinians

Almost every day I watch an interview on television with a relative of one of the fallen “wearers of knitted-kippot.” Yes, “wearers of knitted-kippot” is the most precise description for these members of the religious Zionist community. Not settlers, not messianists, not annexationists. Heroes. No group in Israel exhibits greater determination, sacrifice, identification, courage and a willingness for combat than they do.

There are others like them – non-religious soldiers from moshavim and kibbutzim; city people from Tel Aviv, Netanya, Herzliya, Haifa, Be’er Sheva and other cities; and those from the periphery, from Kiryat Shmona to Eilat – but none more than them. The number of fallen soldiers among the religious Zionist community well exceeds their percentage among the general population.

Hostages and Missing Families Forum: ‘Netanyahu’s behavior is reckless, this is an opportunity that we may never get again’

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum referred to comments made by security officials regarding conditions stipulated by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that according to the officials could derail a deal that would release the hostages.

“We are shocked by the reckless behavior that could cause the missing of an opportunity that we may never get again,” the forum said. “It’s now or never. By the time everyone comes to their senses and work together, there might not be anyone to bring back. The families address the prime minister – we stand behind the Netanyahu deal, now it is your turn to stand behind the deal you put on the table.”

UN chief says no alternative to UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres declared on Friday that there is no alternative to the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA and 118 countries backed the relief organization as indispensable, amid stepped up efforts by Israel to dismantle it.

The UN Relief and Works Agency provides education, health and aid to millions of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. Since war erupted nine months ago between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, UN officials have stressed UNRWA is the backbone of aid operations.

“My appeal to everyone is this: Protect UNRWA, protect UNRWA staff, and protect UNRWA’s mandate – including through funding,” Guterres told an UNRWA pledging conference in New York on Friday. “Let me be clear: there is no alternative to UNRWA.”

Several countries halted their funding to UNRWA following accusations by Israel that some of the agency’s staff were involved in the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel that triggered the Gaza war. Most donors have since resumed their funding, while the UN is conducting an internal investigation.
