Russia says peacekeepers in Ukraine means ‘direct armed conflict’
Russia said Thursday that countries deploying peacekeepers in Ukraine would be engaging in a “direct armed conflict” with Moscow, and that they would respond to this by “all available means”.
“It is absolutely unacceptable to us that army units of other states are stationed in Ukraine under any flag,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said. “All this would mean the involvement of these countries in a direct armed conflict with our country.”

Iraq says seeking alternatives to Iran gas
Iraq is exploring alternatives to Iranian gas imports, including options in the Gulf, a government official said, as it seeks to reduce dependence on its neighbour after the United States ended an electricity sanctions waiver.
“Previously, we only had imports from Iran, but there are government directives and a political will to rely on multiple sources of imports,” said Saad Jassem, an official at Iraq’s electricity ministry.
“We have not yet stopped Iranian gas imports,” the director of the fuel department at the ministry told AFP in an interview on Wednesday.
His remarks come amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran, after Iran rejected a US offer of talks on its nuclear programme.
The administration of US President Donald Trump announced at the weekend its decision to end a sanctions waiver that had allowed Iraq to buy electricity from Iran.
“The administration has made clear to the Iraqi government that it needs to make swift progress in eliminating all Iranian natural gas purchases,” a US diplomat told AFP on condition of anonymity.
Iran’s gas and electricity supply account for a third of Iraq’s energy needs.
Despite having vast oil wealth, Iraq has been ravaged by decades of conflict, suffers from crumbling infrastructure and is plagued by daily power cuts.
“We must consider the worst-case scenario — if there is an interruption, we have prepared alternatives,” Jassem said.
“In the region, Qatar is the largest natural gas producer — we have made several visits, and they are ready to help Iraq with preferential rates,” the official said, adding that “Oman is also an option”.
Negotiations were also underway to buy gas from Turkmenistan to be delivered via pipelines across Iran, he added.
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has called for a new nuclear deal with Tehran while reinstating his “maximum pressure” policy of sanctions.

I was most amused actually to see that within a space of 12 hours, both two of India’s leading companies, Jio and Airtel, announcing a partnership with Starlink, a company owned by Elon Musk. And they described it as a win-win situation. Both these companies had been opposing Starlink’s entry into India on the grounds that Starlink wanted the allocation of spectrum when they wanted spectrum to be auctioned, which was the government of India’s policy since 2014… This is clearly why Airtel and Jio’s move with Starlink has been orchestrated by the prime minister to buy peace with Mr Trump through Mr Musk. Every day, Mr Trump is announcing that India is reducing its tariffs, reducing its import duties. We don’t know what the situation is, what India has agreed on, and what has not agreed. But clearly, this is a friendship-buying move. The Prime Minister is clearly hoping that Mr Trump will be kept happy because we have kept Mr Musk happy.

A United Nations investigation concluded Thursday that Israel carried out “genocidal” acts in the Gaza Strip through the systematic destruction of sexual and reproductive healthcare facilities.
The UN Commission of Inquiry found that Israeli authorities “have destroyed in part the reproductive capacity of Palestinians in Gaza as a group through the systematic destruction of sexual and reproductive healthcare, amounting to two categories of genocidal acts”, it said in a statement.

SpaceX scrubs astronaut flight that was to retrieve stuck astronauts
SpaceX on Wednesday scrubbed the expected launch of a replacement crew of four astronauts to the International Space Station that would have set in motion the long-awaited homecoming of U.S. astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who have been stuck in space for nine months after a trip on Boeing’s faulty Starliner. NASA had been set to launch a SpaceX rocket from Florida carrying a replacement crew for the International Space Station in a mission that would set up the return to Earth of Wilmore and Williams – stuck in space for nine months after a trip on Boeing’s faulty Starliner. The launch was called off due to a hydraulic system issue with a ground support clamp arm for the Falcon 9 rocket, NASA said in a statement.
NASA said the next available launch opportunity is no earlier than 7:26 p.m. EDT (2326 GMT) Thursday, pending review of the issue. With a Thursday Crew-10 launch, the Crew-9 mission would depart the space station on Monday, March 17, it said. The U.S. space agency had moved up the mission by two weeks after President Donald Trump and his adviser Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, called for Wilmore and Williams to be brought back earlier than NASA had planned.
Russia lays out demands for talks with US on Ukraine, sources say
Russia has presented the U.S. with a list of demands for a deal to end its war against Ukraine and reset relations with Washington, according to two people familiar with the matter.
It is not clear what exactly Moscow included on its list or whether it is willing to engage in peace talks with Kyiv prior to their acceptance. Russian and American officials discussed the terms during in-person and virtual conversations over the last three weeks, the people said.
They described the Kremlin’s terms as broad and similar to demands it previously has presented to Ukraine, the U.S. and NATO.
Those earlier terms included no NATO membership for Kyiv, an agreement not to deploy foreign troops in Ukraine and international recognition of President Vladimir Putin’s claim that Crimea and four provinces belong to Russia.
US arms flow to Ukraine again as the Kremlin mulls a ceasefire proposal
U.S. arms deliveries to Ukraine resumed Wednesday, officials said, a day after the Trump administration lifted its suspension of military aid for Kyiv in its fight against Russia’s invasion, and officials awaited the Kremlin’s response to a proposed 30-day ceasefire endorsed by Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said it’s important not to “get ahead” of the question of responding to the ceasefire, which was proposed by Washington. He told reporters that Moscow is awaiting “detailed information” from the U.S. and suggested that Russia must get that before it can take a position. The Kremlin has previously opposed anything short of a permanent end to the conflict and has not accepted any concessions.
U.S. President Donald Trump wants to end the three-year war and pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to enter talks. The suspension of U.S. assistance happened days after Zelenskyy and Trump argued about the conflict in a tense White House meeting. The administration’s decision to resume military aid after talks Tuesday with senior Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia marked a sharp shift in its stance.

Congress says BJP has “sinister plot to talibanize Maharashtra,” demands Nitish Rane’s resignation
Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of trying to “Talibanize” the state, saying that the party is using Minister Nitesh Rane to give “provocative statements” in line with their agenda.
The party’s attack comes amidst repeated statements by Maharashtra minister Nitish Rane’s statements being embroiled in controversy and drawing ire from opposition parties.
“Maharashtra has a glorious history of great saints and noble leaders. However, individuals with a particular ideology are deliberately spreading false information, distorting history, and polluting the social environment. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj established Swarajya by including warriors from all 18 castes. He never fostered hatred against anyone. However, the BJP is now misusing his name to disrupt Maharashtra’s social harmony,” said Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Harshavardhan Sapkal.

Cautious Russia weighs Ukraine ceasefire plan as US tries to seal a deal
The Kremlin said on Wednesday it would review details from Washington about a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine before responding, while U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio hoped a deal would be struck within days.
As Moscow considered the plan, President Vladimir Putin, dressed in military fatigues, made a surprise visit to Russia’s Kursk region for the first time since Ukrainian troops captured part of it last year.
With Putin’s presence highlighting recent Russian advances in Kursk, Valery Gerasimov, head of Russia’s General Staff, told the Kremlin leader his troops had repelled Ukrainian forces from 86% of the ground they once held in Kursk. Ukraine had hoped to use that territory as a bargaining chip in any peace talks with Moscow.
The U.S. on Tuesday agreed to resume weapons supplies and intelligence sharing with Ukraine after Kyiv said at talks in Saudi Arabia that it was ready to support a ceasefire proposal.
The Kremlin on Wednesday said it was carefully studying the results of that meeting and awaited details from the U.S.
Rubio said the United States was hoping for a positive response, and that if the answer was “no” then it would tell Washington a lot about the Kremlin’s true intentions.
