The European Union on Wednesday urged leaders attending the BRICS summit in Russia to tell President Vladimir Putin to “immediately end the war” in Ukraine.

Putin is hosting around 20 world leaders, including from China, India, Turkey and Iran along with the United Nations chief Antonio Guterres, in Russia.

The meeting in the central city of Kazan is the largest diplomatic gathering in Russia since Putin ordered troops into Ukraine in 2022 and is aimed at showing Moscow has overcome Western attempts to isolate it.

“We trust that all participants of the summit in Kazan will use this event to call on Putin once again to immediately end the war against the Ukrainian people,” EU spokesman Peter Stano said.

Putin — who faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court — told the summit a “multipolar world order” is being formed.

He also welcomed offers by BRICS leaders to mediate in the Ukraine conflict and told them Moscow’s forces were advancing on the battlefield, Putin’s spokesman said.

EU spokesman Stano told a press conference that all leaders were “free to travel wherever they want”.

But he reminded Turkey, which remains a candidate to join the bloc despite its efforts being frozen, that the EU’s stance was “to isolate Russia internationally as much as possible.”
