Donald Trump Inauguration Day Live: Rhodes and Tarrio were two of the highest-profile defendants Jan. 6 defendants and received some of the harshest punishments in what became the largest investigation in Justice Department history.

Their attorneys confirmed to The Associated Press on Tuesday they had been released hours after Trump pardoned, commuted the sentences of or ordered the dismissal of cases against all the 1,500-plus people who were charged with federal crimes in the riot.

Trump, meanwhile, has additional executive orders awaiting his signature as he returns to the White House for the first time since his swearing-in earlier in the day. Those documents would end diversity, equity and inclusion funding, crack down on border crossings and ease regulations on oil and natural gas production. The Republican has promised dozens of actions, though it’s unclear whether he’ll make good on his pledge to do them all on his first day.

Donald Trump was sworn in for a historic second term as president on Monday. With one hand raised in the air and the other on a Bible given to him by his mother, the 47th US president solemnly took the oath of office beneath the huge Rotunda of the US Capitol.

Trump later in his inaugural speech spoke on a range of issues, from immigration to Mars mission. Trump in his first remarks as the 47th president declared that the “golden age of America begins right now.” “From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world,” he said.

Declaring that government faces a “crisis of trust,” Trump said in his inaugural address that under his administration “our sovereignty will be reclaimed. Our safety will be restored. The scales of justice will be rebalanced.”

Trump claimed “a mandate to completely and totally reverse a horrible betrayal,” promising to “give the people back their faith, their wealth, their democracy and indeed their freedom.”

He added: “From this moment on, America’s decline is over.”

The executive orders are the first step in what Trump is calling “the complete restoration of America and the revolution of common sense.”

The new US president listed a series of actions he would immediately roll out that included declaring a national emergency at the US-Mexico border, renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, and that the US would take back the Panama Canal.

Republican Trump and outgoing Democratic President Joe Biden had earlier traveled by motorcade together to the Capitol, where the ceremony was being held indoors — and with a much smaller crowd — for the first time in decades due to frigid weather.

Earlier, they and their spouses met for a traditional tea at the White House.

“Welcome home,” Biden said to Trump as he and First Lady Jill Biden greeted their successors at the front door to the presidential residence.

The world’s richest man, Elon Musk, Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon chief Jeff Bezos and Google CEO Sundar Pichai all had prime seats in the Capitol alongside Trump’s family and cabinet members.

With minutes left in his presidency, Biden issued extraordinary pre-emptive pardons for his brothers and sister to shield them from “baseless and politically motivated investigations.”

He also pardoned former Covid-19 advisor Anthony Fauci, retired general Mark Milley, and members of a US House committee probing the violent January 6, 2021 US Capitol attack by Trump’s supporters.

Biden said he had also restored the tradition of leaving a letter for his successor — though he said the contents were between him and Trump.

‘We don’t want to be Americans’, Greenland PM says

Greenland’s prime minister said Tuesday the Danish autonomous territory wanted to stake out its own future and did not want to become American, following US President Donald Trump’s renewed remarks about taking control of the island.

Trump, who took office on Monday, set off alarm bells in early January by refusing to rule out military intervention to bring the Panama Canal and Greenland under US control.

While Trump didn’t mention Greenland in his inauguration speech on Monday, he was asked about it by reporters in the Oval Office afterwards.

“Greenland is a wonderful place, we need it for international security,” Trump responded.

After taking oath, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio briefs media

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says, “It’s been a busy 72 hours and maybe longer, 96 hours, I guess. First, I want to thank Jeanette, my wife, who has been so supportive. As the vice president knows well, it’s impossible to do any of these jobs we do here, including the Senate, but now in this new role. As far as the task ahead, President Trump was elected to keep promises and he’s going to keep those promises. And his primary promise when it comes to foreign policy is that the priority of the United States Department of State will be the United States. It will be furthering the national interest of this country. And he’s given us a very clear mandate. President Trump’s made it very clear everything we do, and this is true in government, but especially at the Department of State, everything we do must be justified by the answer to one of three questions: Does it make us stronger? Does it make us safer, and does it make us more prosperous? If it doesn’t do one of those three things, we will not do it.”

First Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting set for Tuesday

A day after President Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th President of the United States, the spotlight turns to the future of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), with Secretary of State nominee Marco Rubio likely to meet External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Tuesday. This informal meeting is expected to focus on the dates for the fifth Quad leaders’ summit, which is slated to take place in India later this year.

While official confirmation is still awaited, both the U.S. and India have signalled the potential for this meeting, with discussions focusing on strengthening the Quad alliance, especially in the Indo-Pacific region. Since the Quad’s revival in 2017 under President Trump, the grouping has become increasingly aligned on strategic issues, with the September 2024 Leaders’ Summit in Delaware marking a significant milestone in this collaboration.

Elon Musk on X after German Chancellor Scholz’s comments in Davos on Freedom of Speech: “Shame on Oaf Schitz”

President Trump opened his first full day in office with high-profile firings

President Trump opened his first full day in office with high-profile firings. He pledged to remove more than 1,000 presidential appointees “who are not aligned with our vision.” In a post on his TruthSocial platform, Trump dismissed chef and humanitarian Jose Andres from the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, Ret. Gen. Mark Milley from the National Infrastructure Advisory Council, former State Dept. official Brian Hook from the board of the Wilson Center, and former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms from the President’s Export Council.

“YOUR’E FIRED!” he wrote in a post just after midnight Tuesday.

Milley, the former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff under Trump, received a pardon from former President Joe Biden on Monday over concerns he could be criminally targeted by the new administration. His portrait in the Pentagon was also removed. Hook, who was Trump’s Iran envoy during his first term, had been involved in the Trump administration transition. No reasoning was given for his firing.

Despite an ambitious 100-days agenda, the Republican-led Congress isn’t on the same page on some of the basics of their ideas and strategies as they rush to deliver tax cuts for the wealthy, mass deportations and other priorities for Trump.

Scholz shows cautious optimism for U.S.-German relations following first talks with Trump

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz voiced cautious optimism regarding the potential for improved relations between Germany and the United States under President Donald Trump’s administration. Scholz highlighted the significance of continued cooperation between the two nations for global peace and economic prosperity.

U.S. as a Key Ally for Germany

“The United States is our closest ally outside Europe. And I will do everything in my power to ensure that it stays that way,” Scholz remarked in his address. He underscored the long-standing partnership between the two countries, reinforcing its importance to Germany’s foreign policy and its role in global stability.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Scholz’s comments followed his initial talks with the Trump administration, which have been described as positive. While cautious about the future, the Chancellor expressed confidence that both nations would continue to work together on common goals, including global security and economic growth. His statement reflects the ongoing commitment to fostering strong bilateral ties despite the potential challenges posed by changing political landscapes.

Aiming for Peace and Prosperity

The Chancellor’s message was clear: U.S.-German relations are crucial for maintaining peace and prosperity, not only for the two countries but for the world as a whole. Scholz’s assurance is likely to reassure allies and partners that, despite political shifts, Germany remains committed to its key alliances.

Donald Trump’s inauguration holds warning signs for US democracy

All the living former presidents were there and the outgoing president amicably greeted his successor, who gave a speech about the country’s bright future and who left to the blare of a brass band.

At first glance, President Donald Trump’s second inauguration seemed like a continuation of the country’s nearly 250-year-long tradition of peaceful transfers of power, essential to its democracy. And there was much to celebrate: Trump won a free and fair election last fall, and his supporters hope he will be able to fix problems at the border, end the war in Ukraine and get inflation under control.

Still, on Monday, the warning signs were clear.

Pardoned prisoners from Jan. 6 attack to go free on Trump’s first full day in office

Supporters of Donald Trump who attacked the U.S. Capitol four years ago will start leaving prison on Tuesday, pardoned by the new president in a flurry of Inauguration Day executive orders showing intent to stamp radical change on the country.

Trump was expected to sign more executive orders on Tuesday, after measures issued on Monday that included moves to curb immigration and roll back environmental regulation as well as a 75-day delay in enforcement of a ban on short-video app TikTok.

The Republican president’s pardon of 1,500 defendants drew outrage from lawmakers who were endangered in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack, when thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent Congress certifying his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.

The pardons were among orders Trump signed within hours of taking office, returning in a mood of triumph to the White House after winning last November’s election. In his inaugural speech he criticized Biden’s presidency and portrayed himself as chosen by God to save a faltering nation.

Why JD Vance is the 50th Vice President of the US, but is serving under the 47th US President

Donald Trump officially holds the title of the 47th president of the United States, but the country’s newly elected vice president is actually America’s 50th. JD Vance is the 50th and youngest person at the age of 40, to occupy the role of vice president, and the history of the U.S. executive branch explains this unusual number. In the early years of American history, the vice presidency was sometimes left vacant. For instance, during the presidency of James Madison, the vice president’s position remained unfilled for periods of time. Continue reading.

A fact sheet from the new US administration that is yet to be made public has called for key federal agencies to address foreign-exchange manipulation by other countries, prompting strategists to ponder who will be targeted. The costs for the official events surrounding President-elect Donald Trump’s second inauguration are being covered by his inauguration committee, chaired by longtime allies Steve Witkoff, a real estate developer and Trump’s pick for Middle East envoy, and Kelly Loeffler, a former U.S. senator whom Trump has chosen to head the Small Business Administration. While taxpayers will foot the bill for the swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol, the rest of the celebration, including performances, balls, and other events, will be financed by private donations.

Several prominent figures have already pledged substantial amounts to the fund, including tech moguls Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Tim Cook, and Sam Altman, who have each committed $1 million. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi and the company itself have also donated $1 million each. The fundraising efforts have already surpassed expectations, with the committee bringing in over $170 million, significantly more than the $106.7 million raised for Trump’s 2017 inauguration.
