Recent military alliances in the volatile Horn of Africa are fueling existing tensions in the region. Analysts expect Red Sea littoral states to draw in more competition between international powers over strategic economic and security interests.
Tensions between Egypt and Ethiopia have been on the rise since Cairo and Mogadishu signed a security pact last month, with Egypt making moves to send troops and weapons to Somalia.
The prospect of Egyptian troops in Somalia alarms neighboring Ethiopia, already at odds with Egypt over the long-disputed Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which downstream Egypt and Sudan consider a threat to their national and water security (MEES, 22 December 2023).
