Hunter Biden loses bid to toss tax evasion case

On Monday, a judge denied Hunter Biden’s attempt to dismiss a federal tax evasion case against him in California, reported Reuters. The son of U.S. President Joe Biden is set to stand trial in September after pleading not guilty to the charges.
Hunter Biden had previously been convicted in Delaware in June for lying about his illegal drug use when purchasing a firearm. In his bid to dismiss the tax case, he argued that David Weiss, the special counsel overseeing both prosecutions, was illegally appointed. However, the judge rejected this argument, allowing the case to proceed.

US intelligence officials say Iran is to blame for hacks targeting Trump, Biden-Harris campaigns

U.S. intelligence officials announced on Monday that they are confident Iran was behind the hack of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. This cyber intrusion is viewed as part of a broader effort by Tehran to interfere in American politics and potentially influence the outcome of the election, reported AP.
This assessment, made by the FBI and other federal agencies, marks the first time the U.S. government has directly blamed Iran for hacks that have renewed concerns about foreign interference in elections. The officials indicated that, in addition to targeting Trump’s campaign, Iran also attempted to hack into the presidential campaign of Kamala Harris.

The Supreme Court is set to hear bail pleas filed by BRS leader K Kavitha, who faces charges of corruption and money laundering in connection with the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam, on Tuesday, August 20, 2024.
According to the cause list on the Supreme Court’s website, the matter will be heard by a bench led by Justice BR Gavai. The bench, which also includes Justice KV Viswanathan, will resume its consideration of Kavitha’s bail pleas after initially agreeing last week to examine her case. The court had instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to submit their responses but declined to grant any interim relief until both agencies present their arguments.
