Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is known to be obsessed with control over the media. This obsession has already led him into court on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust in three different corruption cases. This week, he embarked on another campaign to destroy the free press, a dangerous new phase in his plan to destroy Israel’s democracy and replace it with an authoritarian regime headed by himself. To this end, he employed Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi, one of his devout loyalists, who announced his intentions at a meeting of the Ministerial Committee for Legislation: “We are the people’s elected representatives, and we can change the system of government if we want to.”
