BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 18. Iran has prepared proposals for inter-parliamentary activities in the field of climate, a representative of the Iranian Parliament, Rahmatullah Nowruz said speaking at a panel session on “Navigating human mobility and climate change: addressing climate-induced migration and displacement” on the sidelines of the COP29 Parliamentary Meeting, jointly organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Parliament of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Trend reports.
“The role of parliaments in these matters is extremely important. Parliaments can strengthen cooperation, share experience in drafting legislation, increase the adaptive capacity of states to climate change, and cooperate in natural resource management, codifying international norms, and developing programs within the framework of parliamentary diplomacy. The Islamic Republic of Iran has prepared a proposal for inter-parliamentary activities, which will be presented later,” he said.
Novruz noted that six migration routes pass through Iran, which creates special challenges for the country. “Climate change is a result of industrialization in developed countries, environmental destruction, and armed conflicts. These factors have led to numerous problems,” he added.
“Iran hosts millions of Afghan refugees, and our country spends more than $10 billion annually to support them. The international community must take this issue seriously. In addition, climate change and environmental challenges are exacerbated by the construction of dams on rivers located on the border between Iran and Afghanistan. This particularly affects the residents of Sistan and Baluchestan province, which requires urgent measures,” he said.
