This wasn’t the Iranian axis’ week in the Middle East. Just a few days after Iran and Hezbollah were forced to accept a cease-fire on inconvenient terms in Lebanon, the situation in Syria has changed completely, to the detriment of Syrian President Bashar Assad. For the first time since massive military intervention by Russia enabled Assad’s regime to achieve some kind of victory and regain control over roughly two-thirds of the country in 2018, the Sunni rebels have scored a significant achievement, possibly inspired by the cease-fire agreement.
