Iran’s Imam Khomeini port sees surge in volume of cargo handling

BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 30. The volume of loaded and unloaded cargo at Imam Khomeini Port of Khuzestan Province, located in southwestern Iran, increased by 11 percent in the first 6 months of the current Iranian year (from March 20 through September 21, 2024) compared to the same period of last year (from March 21 through September 22, 2023), director general of the Port and Maritime Administration of Iran’s Khuzestan Province, Abu Talib Gerayloo said, Trend reports.

According to him, about 24 million tons of cargo were loaded and unloaded at Imam Khomeini Port in six months.

Gerayloo added that 7.13 million tons of necessary products were unloaded at Imam Khomeini Port in the six months. This is 36 percent more than the same period last year.

The official stated that about 41,000 TEU of containers were loaded and unloaded at Imam Khomeini Port in the six months. This figure increased by 45 percent compared to the same period last year.

Gerayloo noted that 6 contracts were signed to develop Imam Khomeini Port during the reporting period, with a total value of 84.7 trillion rials (about $189 million).

“Increase in the loading and unloading capacity of cargo at Imam Khomeini Port by 11.5 million tons annually, the expansion of warehouse capacity for oil products to 300,000 tons per year, and the enhancement of container operations to 400,000 TEU,” he added.

To note, Imam Khomeini Port has the potential to load and unload 60 million tons of oil and non-oil products per year.
