Abstract
With the development of new technologies in the near future, a new concept called the metaverse will affect all areas of human life. The metaverse has focused on the development of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) headsets in the Internet environment; in general, it can be considered a set of 3D virtual worlds. However, despite the numerous advantages of the metaverse technology, the effects of the possible ethical and social consequences associated with this new technology on human life cannot be entirely discounted. For example, with little care in applying the artificial intelligence technologies in various fields, it can be concluded that ethical and social issues are one of the main concerns in the use of these technologies. One of the most important areas affected by artificial intelligence technologies is user privacy. With the expansion of the metaverse and more access to user information, this issue can be more at risk than others. Therefore, protecting user privacy is one of the key challenges facing the metaverse developers in the near future. Another challenge in the metaverse systems is security issues. The most important risk in this field is cyber-physical attacks, in which hackers can control a user’s physical systems. Owing to the importance of these types of risks, this chapter deals with the social and ethical challenges of the metaverse. The discussion in this case can help legislators pass new laws and inform users about their rights.
