On February 7, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that it was impossible to negotiate with the United States because it had already deceived Tehran once. Washington concluded a nuclear deal, failed to fulfill its terms, did not lift anti-Iran sanctions and unilaterally terminated the agreement, Khamenei recalled.
On February 4, Trump signed an executive order to restore maximum US pressure on Iran. The document provides for the intensification of Washington’s efforts to reduce Iran’s oil exports. At the same time, the US leader allowed the possibility of a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and said he wanted to make a “great deal” with Tehran.
Earlier, Bloomberg quoted sources as saying that Moscow expressed readiness to help Washington in negotiations with Tehran. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in turn, said that the Kremlin sees the potential for a peaceful settlement of the situation with the country’s nuclear program, which worries the United States. According to him, Russia is ready to do everything possible for this purpose.
“I sent [a] letter to Iran’s [supreme leader] Ali Khamenei on Thursday. I said I hope you’re going to negotiate, because it’s going to be a lot better for Iran,” he said in an interview with the Fox Business TV channel. “I think they want to get that letter. The other alternative is we have to do something, because you can’t let another nuclear weapon,” Trump emphasized.
