The United Nations called Wednesday for the immediate and unconditional release of jailed 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi after the Iranian authorities freed her temporarily on medical grounds.

The 52-year-old human rights activist was freed from Tehran’s Evin prison for what her lawyer said was a three-week suspension of her jail sentence.

Mohammadi has been jailed since November 2021 over several past convictions relating to her advocacy against the obligatory hijab for women and capital punishment in Iran.

“It is important that Narges Mohammadi was released temporarily for health reasons in order to receive adequate treatment,” a UN human rights office spokesman told AFP.

“We reiterate our call for the immediate and unconditional release of Ms Mohammadi, and for all Iranian women and men who are detained or imprisoned for the legitimate exercise of their freedom of expression and other human rights.”

Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize primarily for her campaigning against the death penalty in Iran.
