- 00:00Now Iran and Sudan have agreed to deepen ties with new partnerships in mining, banking and livestock production. The announcement comes as the Islamic Republic moves to widen its influence on the fringes of the Middle East. Bloomberg Simon Marks has more on this, joining us from Nairobi. Just bring us up to speed on what we know about these ties. Simon. Hi there. Yeah, well, this agreement was made this week. It was a delegation from Tehran in Port Sudan, which is the de-facto capital of Sudan at the moment that the Sudanese armed forces runs. And these relations have been getting better and better ever since the end of 2023. Previously, Iran and Sudan had drifted apart because Sudan had provided soldiers to fight against the Houthis in Yemen, much to Iran’s disdain. But since the war in Sudan has come about, there’s been reason for them to grow closer. And and it’s a huge deal, really, because many people in the region that do not want to see these two countries get closer. The founding of political Islam in the Sudan is a big concern for for for Western countries. And not to mention, obviously, giving Iran a fertile foothold on the Red Sea to.
